Shopify February ’25 Updates and New Features

Shopify February 2025 Updates and New Features

If you haven’t yet explored which new features and updates became available in Shopify in February, it’s time to get familiar with and benefit from them. We discovered what’s new and compiled the most essential information in this Shopify digest to make it easy for you to keep up with the latest news.

What’s new for POS?

Those merchants who run brick-and-mortar stores and leverage Shopify POS software will find two new options to make in-store shopping more engaging.

Customization for the POS terminal customer display

With the new 9.28 POS version, merchants who use Shopify POS terminals or the Customer View app for Android can customize their idle screen by adding a logo and background image. This is an opportunity to communicate your brand identity and engage with customers more effectively.

To set up a new appearance for the idle screen, open your Admin and go POS → Settings → Customer displays.

You’ll see Display Editor with three options: Idle screen, Cart screen, and Thank You screen. Click ‘Idle screen’. Here, you can either use a background color or upload an image within 1080x1920 pixels.

To display accepted card brands on this screen, tick the ‘Show payment options’ box and click Save.

SMS marketing opt-ins for customers

With the latest Shopify updates, you can ask customers to opt in for your SMS marketing campaigns via POS.

There are two ways to get customers’ consent for this:

  1. From Staff on a Customer profile
  2. From customers via receipt selection on the customer-facing display

To enable this feature, you need to activate a collection of customer phone numbers at checkout. To do this, check if your business address is in the list of the supported countries, then go to Settings → Checkout, scroll to Marketing options, and activate SMS.

Note that you need to activate an SMS app to proceed with this option. Once these settings are enabled, the ‘Accept SMS marketing’ toggle will become visible to the Staff on the customer profile during checkout. Customers can also opt-in to receive SMS marketing during receipt selection if their phone number has already been attached to their profile.

What’s new in Admin?

The Shopify team cares to make it easier for merchants to navigate through Admin, so they added new tools for searching necessary information. You will also find new privacy features to stay compliant with privacy regulations across Europe.

Updated default sort order to index pages

The Shopify team adjusted the default sort orders to prioritize the most relevant information for some index tables.

  • Products can now be sorted by Last created (most recent first) instead of alphabetically.
  • Purchase orders are now sorted by expected arrival date (future dates first) instead of Last created.
  • Transfers can be sorted by estimated arrival date (future date first) instead of Last created.
  • Files are now sorted using the Last added option.

Sort options are placed in the top right corner of the index page, letting you easily manage the data available.

New privacy features to sell across Europe

Shopify introduced new privacy features to build trust with customers from Europe more efficiently and stay compliant with privacy regulations.

  • The cookie consent banner lets customers modify their consent preferences instead of manually clearing cookies. To set up this banner, go to Settings → Customer privacy and click Cookie banner. You can enable this banner for specific regions and edit the banner appearance here.

  • The cookie banner at checkout lets you collect customer consent even for sessions starting at checkout. This feature is inactive by default, but you can activate it at the bottom of the cookie banner settings.

  • Data sale opt-out now includes US states. This page allows visitors to opt out of the sale and sharing of their personal data. To set up this page, go to Settings → Customer privacy → Data sales opt-out page.

Additional commerce objects in search and Sidekick

Sidekick and search allow merchants to navigate across Admin easily. Shopify updates include more commerce objects to enhance context suggestions for search and Sidekick and quickly find Markets, Draft Orders, Discounts, Marketing Automations, Purchase Orders, Locations, Company Locations, and Catalogs.

What’s new for Checkout?

To make the checkout process even more efficient, Shopify provides all the means for smooth checkout customization. With the February updates, merchants can choose regions to show pre-select email consent and view the Scripts report to migrate to new checkout functionality.

You can now add regions where the email marketing consent is pre-selected, letting customers uncheck the opt-in box at checkout to unsubscribe. To select regions, go to Settings → Checkout and edit the Regions you choose in the Marketing options section.

Shopify Scripts customizations report

If you haven’t yet replaced Shopify Scripts with Shopify Functions for discount, shipping, and payment customization, meet an AI-generated personalized report. Use it to see your existing customizations and find relevant Shopify Functions or app alternatives. This report is available in your Admin → Settings → Checkout → Scripts Report. The end date to migrate to Shopify Functions is August 28, 2025.

What else?

In addition to POS, Admin, and Checkout updates, you can enjoy a new feature for Shopify Fulfillment Network, improvements for Shopify Collective, and access to tax calculation for all plans. Some of the features like Inbox in the Shop App, auto-added products on the Checkout Blocks App, and Meta Pay are now deprecated on Shopify. Let’s dive into more details.

Shopify duties and import taxes available for all Shopify plans

Starting February 2, 2025, merchants on all Shopify plans can use the duties and import taxes calculator. Previously, this feature was only available for Advanced Shopify and Shopify Plus plans. See all the details about pricing and terms of collecting taxes and duties on Shopify here. If you consider choosing another Shopify plan, check our detailed article on Shopify pricing.

New dashboard in Shopify Fulfillment Network (SFN)

The new SFN dashboard allows you to monitor transfers, orders, and inventory using metrics like order-to-delivery, in-transit, and fulfillment times. You can also view Fulfillment Network notifications to be aware of orders on hold and transfers in progress. Learn more details here.

Connections table for Shopify Collective

Merchants connected to Shopify Collective can now search for partners by name, use filters by date, and sort alphabetically to find the desired collaboration faster.

Deprecating Inbox in the Shop App

The Shopify team is working on rebuilding inbox functionality and deprecating an old version of Shop Inbox in the Shop App. Starting February 19, 2025, this feature has been discontinued. This means that Shop users can no longer chat with merchants using this app, while merchants have no access to the Shop chat in the Shopify Inbox channel. There is also no access to the existing chats initiated through the Shop App.

Deprecation of auto-added products on the Checkout Blocks App

Starting February 20, 2025, merchants cannot auto-add products in checkbox upsell blocks using the Shopify Checkout Blocks App. This setting is automatically turned off for the stores that leveraged this feature before the deprecation. To auto-add free gifts in your checkout process now, you need to use third-party apps.

Meta Pay deprecation on Shopify Payments

Meta Pay is no longer available as an express payment method on Shopify. If you use this option in your store, you can only view transaction history and reports related to this payment method.
