Shopify April ’25 Digest: What’s New and How It Helps You Sell Smarter

Shopify April ’25 Digest

April 2025 rolled out a fresh batch of Shopify updates designed to help merchants streamline operations, enhance customer experience, and drive more sales. In this monthly digest, we’ve compiled the most impactful improvements, changes, and new features so you can stay on top of what’s new and make the most of every update - regardless of whether you’re upgrading your store through Shopify web development, Shopify Plus development, theme customization, or other services.

April's Shopify features and enhancements

April's Shopify features and enhancements

Here’s a rundown of new Shopify features and enhancements to help you manage your store better – from setting order limits and customizing checkout, to improving email design, personalizing POS displays, and more.

Set order value limits in Checkout Blocks

Shopify Plus merchants can now establish a minimum and maximum order value limit in Checkout Blocks to block checkout beyond these figures for all or B2B buyers only.

New editing features in Shopify Email

Shopify Email adds editable padding controls and a refreshed footer. Configure padding to 'auto' or set each side. Accidentally cleared settings reset back to 'auto' for a tidy layout.

The footer is now compact and customizable. Rich text editing lets you highlight key info. Save default settings in Shopify Email brand preferences to streamline emails and automations. New social icons like WhatsApp, Weibo, and WeChat expand subscriber connection options. Learn more about creating campaigns with Shopify Email.

Brand Theme Colors on POS Customer Display

In POS release 10.0 and Customer View release 2.0, you can customize checkout screens by selecting theme colors for the POS Terminal and the Android Customer View app. Utilize the Display Editor in Admin to use the above colors on Cart, Tips, Receipt, and Thank You screens. Incorporate colors with the logo and background media on the Idle screen to enhance your brand. These are accessible for customer-facing displays on the POS Terminal and Android.

Logo & Background Media on Customer Display

You can personalize the Idle Screen in POS 10.0 and Customer View 2.0 by uploading a background image and logo using the Display Editor in Admin. Resize the logo and background transparency for a professional look. PNG and JPG are supported with a recommended size of 1080x1920. These are accessible on the POS Terminal and Android devices. Check the Customize the POS Terminal and Customize Customer View app sections on the Shopify website for more details.

Showcasing your discount codes in the Shop app

As of April 10, 2025, Shop channel access can be enabled for discount codes in the Sales channel access setting. Starting May 2025, Shop will display these codes to some customers on product pages and in the combined discounts section.

Personalized recommendations on Collective

Merchants can now browse personalized suggestions on the Collective discovery page, tailored to buyer demand signals and preferences.

New Add-to-cart Limit

Shopify now allows you to establish a per-product highest amount in a buyer's shopping cart in order not to share inventory data. It works only for online store carts, but not for draft orders, POS, or quantity rule-based catalogs (such as B2B on Shopify).

Your store limit has been defaulted automatically as order history to a default of 50 for stores with fewer than 250 orders. Modify this limit in Settings > Checkout if necessary. For more, visit Shopify Help Center.

Point of Sale (POS) and checkout updates

These are the latest improvements to Shopify POS and checkout that are designed to enhance and simplify in-store and online experiences.

Shopify POS version 10

Shopify POS version 10 is designed for faster, smoother, and more intuitive selling. What’s new:

  1. Refined design Simpler layouts for better focus at checkout.

  2. Navigation Faster access with redesigned menus on tablet and mobile.

  3. Search Inline searching for Orders, Products, Customers, Drafts, and Staff.

  4. Cart improvements Dynamic cart header shows cart type and other information.

  5. Lock screen branding Add custom brand images and logos for a professional look.

  6. Terminal theming Customize idle screen media and apply brand colors at checkout.

Cash Rounding on Point of Sale

Shopify POS v10.1+ cash payments automatically round to the nearest coin denomination in countries that don't use small coins (e.g., Canada, Australia, NZ, certain European countries). See country-specific denomination rounding data in the Help Center.

How will Shopify display cash rounding?

Shopify POS and Admin will be improved to support cash rounding, including:

  • POS checkout: rounded total shown when Cash is selected.
  • Order summary: displays rounded total and POS/Admin total.
  • Receipts: displays Total, Cash rounding, and Adjusted total.
  • Payments reporting: has optional columns for cash rounding and rounded net payments.

Deprecating dark mode in POS terminal and Customer View app

As of April 14, 2025, or with the upgrade to POS v10.0 or Customer View v2.0, dark mode is discontinued and replaced with light colors. Flexible color theming became available instead of dark mode, allowing for the customization of checkout screen colors.

Ship and carryout in a single order on POS

Shopify POS now allows staff to build orders with mixed delivery options, enabling items to be carried out in-store or shipped to customers.

Key updates:

  • Each cart item can have its own delivery method, simplifying mixed orders.
  • Ship and carry out supports selling both in-stock and out-of-stock items together, utilizing inventory across your network.
  • Consolidated carts apply bundle pricing and discounts across all items.

How ship and carryout works:

  • Items of the same variant must share a delivery method.
  • Supported tax engines include Avalara 2.0, Vertex, and Registration-based taxes.
  • All items in a delivery cart must be from the same tax region, except within the EU.
  • Default email templates will reflect shipped and carried-out items. Custom email templates will need to be manually updated.

This feature enhances customer flexibility and streamlines staff workflows. Learn about ship and carry out in the Help Center.

Fulfillment and tax improvements

These are updates on inventory allocation, multi-location fulfillment, and tax handling that enhance order accuracy, streamline shipping processes, and ensure compliance with VAT regulations.

Split item quantity across multiple fulfillment locations at checkout

If one fulfillment location doesn't have enough inventory, the product is divided across multiple fulfillment locations at checkout to prevent stock from going below zero.

Split allocation occurs when:

  • Multiple fulfillment locations are defined.
  • Fulfillable inventory is sold only in specific zones within Shipping and delivery settings (by default, if the option is not available in the Shopify admin).
  • Products or variants stop selling when they're out of stock.
  • A checkout is for an amount of an item that's more than one store's inventory but less than the inventory of all stores combined.

When shipping with Shopify's API, refer to the dev doc to ensure your customizations accommodate the correct quantities.

Reverse Charge expanded to the United Kingdom

The Reverse Charge exemption now also covers the UK, exempting VAT entirely from orders delivered from the EU to the UK for B2B customers, with the exemption in place.

Key updates:

  • VAT is fully exempt for deliveries to the UK if the buyer has the Reverse Charge (EU/UK) exemption.
  • “Reverse Charge” will now be displayed on VAT invoices on Shopify Tax merchants who enroll.

Action required:

Ensure admin locations are up to date, as the exemption will fail if the default location is outside the EU.

For Plus merchants:

  • Go to Companies.
  • Select the company and location to add the exemption.
  • Tap the three dots on the Customer card and select “Edit tax details.”
  • Change “Tax settings” to “Collect tax unless exemptions apply.”
  • Check the box for “Reverse Charge (EU/UK)” and save.

For other merchants:

  • Go to Customers.
  • Select the customer to add the exemption.
  • Tap the three dots on the Customer card and select “Edit tax details.”
  • Change “Tax settings” to “Collect tax unless exemptions apply.”
  • Check the box for “Reverse Charge (EU/UK)” and save.

No action is needed if the exemption has already been applied.

Web pixels and scripts deprecation

These are web pixels and script deprecations that aim to enhance and streamline functionality for Shopify merchants.

Web Pixels: event.data.checkout.subtotalPrice.amount value change on the new /thank-you page and checkout events

The event.data.checkout.subtotalPrice.amount value in Web Pixels API now reflects line item prices after both product- and order-level discounts, not just product-level discounts as before. This change applies to the new /thank-you page and checkout events, aligning with the old /thank_you page definition.

Affected events:

  • checkout_completed (new /thank-you page only)
  • checkout_started
  • checkout_address_info_submitted
  • checkout_shipping_info_submitted
  • checkout_contact_info_submitted
  • payment_info_submitted

If you use these events, update your pixels to expect subtotal prices including both product and order discounts.

Shopify Scripts Deprecation

Shopify Scripts deprecation is rescheduled to June 30, 2026. Shopify Functions offer more robust features for discounts, shipping, and payments as an alternative to Shopify Scripts for custom logic.

Utilize the Shopify Scripts customizations report to identify what customizations can transition to Shopify Functions or public apps. Scripts that are already running will persist until the new deadline, but migration is advised earlier.

For a detailed breakdown of why and how to migrate, read our article From Shopify Scripts to Shopify Functions. The Whys and Hows of Migration.
